Show of hands who loves a good recovery after a hard work out?  I’d be willing to bet the crowd is pretty even split, but do we know the formula for a good recovery?  There a few key elements to a good post workout recovery we all should take to heart.

I am totally a type A person.  For as long as I can remember I have tried to get some sort of workout in every day.  Some more difficult than others but if I don’t get it in I am one cranky mama, my kids have told me so.  Racing triathlons, I was always in the mindset of getting not one discipline of training in but three, so to take a day off was not really in my mental wheel house.  It was VERY hard for me not to do something.  I was always on the lookout for a good active recovery.  Something that wasn’t strenuous  but as far as my mind was concerned I wasn’t being lazy.  I had a friend tell me about paddle boarding, tried it, and I was sold.  Why do I tell you this?  Well recovery is going to be different for every person as well as what you’re recovering from, but there are a few key elements you need to keep in mind when in recovery mode.

So, if you aren’t looking to lose weight and we’re strictly talking recovery from a workout, refuel to match your expenditure.  Timing your meals accordingly taking in healthy fats, carbs for energy & restoration, as well as protein for muscle repair.  Also, make sure to rehydrate particularly in hot weather climates while working out training/competing.

There is a science to all of this so if you want to check out in more detail what you can do to properly recover for maximum benefits check out this article….
